Tense doesn’t even begin describe the first round of the SHL playoffs for Glenbrook North and Stevenson. After four ejections and countless penalties in Game 3, the Spartans took home the 5-1 win Sunday afternoon in Northbrook and advance to play Loyola Gold in Round 2.

“It’s kind of hard to control your emotions,” said GBN goaltender Brennan Nein. “I’m an emotional guy and I got a little out of hand today but playing these kind of games is always fun and it’s going to be emotional.”

In their last 5 SHL games, the Spartans only managed 1 goal so going into Sunday’s game they knew they needed to step it up.

“We’ve been starting every game slow and not going to the net as much,” said Mikey Day. “Today we went hard to the net and made things happen.”

Day ended the game with  a hat trick, all goals coming after he took a hit to the head and fell to the ice.

“I just knew we needed to score more, we haven’t scored much this year and neither have I,” he said. “I had to stay out there and do as much as I could.”

The first period ended scoreless and it was Day who kicked things off in the second, followed by Everett Levin who scored twice in the game.

“I feel like during practice we really stepped it up,” Levin said. “Coach wanted us to go to the net more and that’s what we did, we fought hard.”

Stevenson’s lone goal came from Adam Offenbach in the third. After a five-minute major Glenbrook North was forced to play the remainder of the game short-handed but managed two empty-netters to seal the 5-1 win.

“[Stevenson] is a really good team,” Day said. “ I know they haven’t had the season they wanted but they’re one of the best teams in the state, they were definitely overlooked the whole year.”

Glenbrook North will play Loyola Gold in Game 2 Wednesday, February 20th.
