New Trier Green has been known to be a ‘Third-period team.’ They always find a way to save the best for last, if you will. In a 2-0 win over Glenbrook North Saturday in Northbrook, the Trevians made sure they got an earlier start and put their defense to the test.

“We had a couple of games this week where we came out a little slow, especially in the Quad and it bit us in the (butt),” said New Trier Green goaltender Owen Reger. “We made sure we came out strong in the first period and took it from there.”

Spencer Lifvendahl kicked things off for the Trevians with 13:17 left in the first. They managed 14 shots on goal compared to Glenbrook North’s zero. Mac Zelazny knocked in another with 14:15 left in the second and New Trier hung onto that lead for the remainder of the game.

“In the first period we didn’t have an answer for anything that they did,” said Glenbrook North coach Evan Poulakidas. “They came out and really put us on our heels, they won every loose puck, they certainly came out ready to play.”

The Spartans stepped up their game in the second period managing to put eight shots on goal but it wasn’t enough to get past the New Trier defense.

“They defend very well,” said Poulakidas. “They don’t get enough credit for how well they defend and I thought they pushed us around a lot tonight.”
