The 2015-16 GBN season opened up just like the 2014-15 did with a tough loss at Providence on Sunday.

Providence jumped out to a 2 goal lead by scoring 30 seconds apart in the first period.  But the Spartans got themselves back in the game minutes later by scoring two goals of their own both by Joey Day.  The first goal was created off of a 2-1  situation in which Day deeked right and back handed a shot over Providence goalie Nick Ichachio.  The second GBN goal was scored when Jesse Lowell’s shot from the point on the power play was tipped in by Day.

Providence countered with one goal late in the 1st period and then followed up with 2 more in the 2nd period before Day scored his 3rd of the evening on another power play.

With the score 5-3 Nick Mikhaylov cut the Providence lead to 5-4 when early in the 3rd period he finished a play from in close.  Defensive breakdowns plagued the Spartans all day and they would surrender another goal at the 10 minute mark on another odd man break to close out the scoring at 6-4.
