For the Love of Hockey

Wilmette, IL -- Many high school athletes play multiple sports throughout their career. They find the time to balance sports they love instead of sacrificing one for another. But for Casey Dodge, hockey is the only sport worth his time.

The Barrington senior returns the Broncos this season after taking some time off to try out his baseball career. It took a little while, exchanging the hockey rink for the baseball diamond after his freshman year but he realized hockey is what matters most.

"I decided my senior year I needed to come back," he said with a big smile on his face. "I like the atmosphere, the intensity, the physical play. Baseball's a great sport but it doesn't hold some of the same qualities that hockey does."

Coming back after so long has been an easy transition for Dodge, making him more confident in his decision.

"Everyone on the team has been great," he said. "They're all great guys and they've been very nice to me. They're happy to see me and I was happy to come back."

With the physical differences between hockey and baseball, Dodge knew he'd be in for a little shock.

"I was definitely out of shape," he said. "It's taken me a bunch of games to come back and it wasn't easy at all but I think I'm finally getting to where I was."

In five games this season Dodge has tallied four points with a goal and three assists. He hopes he can help his team get out of the slump they're in and break their four-game losing streak.

"Our goal is to make a great run," he said. "We're working hard, things aren't turning out like we'd like early this season, but hopefully as the season progresses we'll get stronger as a team and come back, play better and win games."
