Stevenson Varsity 2 (Gold) brings speedy forwards and a relentless forecheck that opposing teams will have to counter.
“Our goal is to go deep into the league playoffs, but this will depend on our development throughout the season,” said head coach Marc Shellist. “With hard work, dedication and a strong team mentality, we have the potential to make a significant impact. It will be crucial for us to stay focused, continue to improve and work together towards our common goal.
“If we are disciplined in executing our new systems and playing good team defense, we will be able to achieve our goals and maximize our potential.”
Shellist, 59, who lives in Vernon Hills, has been coaching for 24 years and is in his seventh season at Stevenson.
“We have a lot of developing talent with tremendous potential,” he said.
Key forwards include Tyler Olsen, Leon Vysotskyy and Jaden Kimbrough, and defensemen William Tompkins will be key, too.
The Patriots’ offense is a work-in-progress as most players are adapting to new systems. “As they navigate through this adjustment period, there is a focus on
communication, teamwork and understanding their roles within the new offensive scheme,” Shellist said. “Despite the challenges that come with learning a new system, the team remains optimistic and motivated to improve and succeed together.”
Team defense is a big focus for the team, Shellist said. “It creates a solid foundation for the team to build upon and ensures that they can withstand pressure from opponents. A well-coordinated defense will limit other teams from scoring and lead to more offensive opportunities.”
The Gold goalies are solid, both with SHL experience. “The team has a solid foundation in net,” Shellist said. Plus, a freshman goalie brings a fresh perspective and talent to the team, “showing great potential for a bright future,” Shellist said. “With a combination of experience and new talent, the team’s goaltending unit is poised to be a strong asset this season.”
Breakout Player: Keep an eye on Tyler Olsen, who scored both goals Sept. 15 in the Patriots’ 2-1 league-opening road win at Saint Ignatius. “It’s not about a single breakout player on the team; it's a collective effort. There are numerous players with the potential to shine and make a significant impact,” Shellist said.
