Carmel Catholic will skate directly into the fire when it opens Scholastic Hockey League action on Thursday, October 10 in Vernon Hills: the Corsairs play host to defending state champion New Trier Green.

“This team has more experience and depth compared to past squads. They understand what it takes to compete in the SHL and should be well-prepared for it,” said Paul J. Eberhardt, the Carmel Catholic hockey director and varsity head coach.

“We feel good about our chances (this season). We’ve got 13 players coming back from last year, and many of them are entering their third season of varsity hockey.

“Plus, we have two fantastic goalies and our team speed and puck movement are top-notch. Offensively, we have a lot of talent.”

Eberhardt, who lives in Green Oaks, has been coaching for 25 years and is in his 10th season with Carmel, his fourth year as the head coach and hockey director.

Deacon Rose, in his fourth varsity season and a returning all-state player, leads the Carmel offense. He will be supported by Rocco Lagori, who had a breakout sophomore season a year ago with 20-plus goals and is returning.

Ben Vavra, a returning varsity player, leads the Carmel defense. “He’s a big guy who can really move and has a heavy shot,” Eberhardt said.

Other key returning varsity players include Van Bickers, Kyler Gornick, Christian Leisten and Mark Ellwanger.

In net, the Corsairs feature Tommy Steiner and Gavin Stanley, in their third year at the varsity level.

“The SHL is a tough league, but I believe our team’s grit and character will help manage the challenges,” Eberhardt said “It’s a great league with strong teams, but still somewhat underrated. It’s an excellent place for players who want to play after high school. You improve as a player and play in front of your friends.”

Carmel opened the season splitting their four games in the Warriors Pre-Season Invitational. The Corsairs defeated Oswego and Deerfield.

Breakout Players: Keep an eye on senior captain Ryan Capulong, who suffered a serious injury last season, yet “is set to show the league just how good he is,” Eberhardt said. Also, sophomore forward Ronan Havlis “has the skill, pace, competitiveness and smarts to make a significant impact,” Eberhardt said.
