With the 2022-23 SHL season upon us, here is the third installment of team outlooks, for Barrington and Carmel Catholic:

Barrington
Outlook:
“As a team, I think there is a lot of room for improvement as many of our players don't have much Varsity SHL experience,” Barrington coach Steve Martins said. “The group will get stronger as the season progresses and hopefully we can be playing the right way for a strong finish.”

Varsity experience: “We will have a relatively young team this season with an equal mixture of juniors and seniors. We will be relying on structure and goaltending until we can get some needed game experience for many of our players.”

Leadership: “While captains have not been named, senior leaders will include returners Michael Remi, Hawthorne Silberg, as well as newcomers Andres Rojas and Daniel Cichosz.  Juniors Connor and Brady Lenderman, Marc Scavo and Jake Kunzon will also have a major impact with leading this year's young group. “

Top offensive and defensive players: “Returning forwards Michael Remi, Wil Sherrin and Brady Lenderman as well as newcomer Andres Rojas and Daniel Chicosz will be tasked with shouldering the offense up front, while juniors Connor Lenderman and Marc Scavo will be our top defensive pairing.”

Goaltending: “Looking for both of our goalies, Jack Morch (senior) and Jake Kunzon (junior) to have solid years as our younger inexperienced forward and defensive groups become accustomed to the size and speed of the SHL.”

Carmel Catholic
Outlook:
“We have a great blend of experience and very fast and skilled underclassmen, with eleven seniors on the team, five sophomores, and two freshmen,” Carmel coach Paul Eberhardt said. “We are hoping to build upon the performance the team had last year. The experience, leadership, and determination of the returning players will play a huge role in the success of the team along with the effort and grit of our new players.”

Varsity Experience: “Kyler Gornick is in his fourth year and six returning players in Jake Dankelson, Nick Leaf, Charlie Lenihan Mark Moseley Jack Renn, and Leon Swiatkowski are in their third season of varsity hockey.  We are also excited about our talented and fast young core led by returning sophomore Deacon Rose.”

Leadership: “We have not chosen captains yet but with so many returning players they already understand how competitive the SHL is and the effort and grit needed every game to succeed.”

Top Offensive and Defensive Players:  “Offensively we are counting on contributions across all four lines. Defensively, Swiatkowski and Gornick lead the way.”

Goaltending: “After graduating two senior goalies, we are excited for our sophomore goalies Gavin Stanley and Tommy Steiner.   Both have played extremely well in the spring and early this preseason.”
