Three very different periods of hockey were played Friday night in Addison. What started as a tie-game, turned 4-goal lead for York but ended in a 6-5 shootout win for Glenbrook North.

“They got off to a better start, and we weren’t expecting it,” said Glenbrook North’s Owen Just. “We weren’t playing our game and we really didn’t come to play to start.”

Robert Plummer scored first for the Dukes and GBN’s Cooper Chalin tied it up before heading into the second. York Came back with a vengence in the second with two goals by Frank Nicosia then Elija Maurer and Sam Kamienksi capping off a 5-1 lead going into the final period. 

Heading into the locker room for intermission, the Spartans knew what they had to do. 

“Our leaders, our captains, we stepped up and said ‘I know what all of us are capable of,” said Just. “I think we’re the best team in the state.” 

Glenbrook North goaltender Nate Kasdan was then called to the ice and did not disappoint. The Spartans scored four unanswered goals and Kasdan held his ground as they entered the shootout and sealed the win. 

“It really was just a team effort,” said Kasdan. “I knew we just had to win the period, and whatever happened after that, happened, and I knew the team had my back no matter what.” 

Aiden Siegel scored two goals in the third along with Joshua Genin and Ryan Sandler who tied it up with less than a minute to play.  Just knocked in the game-winner in the shootout. 

“The effort (in the third period) from our bench was unbelivable,” said Just. “That final minute, the adrenaline was rushing, I set a shot for the point and I just heard screams,” he continued. “It was an unbelievable feeling, I heard my bench going nuts. Top ten moment in my life.”
